With medical inflation in India running at 11-13% annually, the ₹3-5 Lakh corporate health cover that felt adequate five years ago is no longer enough. Buying too little leaves you exposed to out-of-pocket costs; buying too much locks up cash in high premiums. Here's how to calculate the ideal Sum Insured.
In Tier-1 metros (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore), major critical illness treatment easily ranges ₹10-15 Lakhs — a base family floater should be a minimum of ₹10 Lakhs. In Tier-2 cities, ₹5-7 Lakhs is a safer baseline.
A ₹5-10 Lakh floater suits young couples; families with children should aim for ₹10-15 Lakhs. Don't club senior citizen parents into your floater, since premiums are based on the oldest member's age — buy them separate cover.
Many plans cap daily room rent to 1% of the Sum Insured. Exceed this, and the hospital scales up all associated charges proportionally, leaving you to pay 30-40% of the bill. Always choose a policy with 'No Room Rent Cap'.
The most cost-effective way to secure high coverage is combining a base plan with a Super Top-Up — e.g. a ₹5 Lakh base policy plus a ₹20 Lakh Super Top-Up with a ₹5 Lakh deductible. If your bill is ₹12 Lakhs, the base pays the first ₹5 Lakhs and the Super Top-Up pays the remaining ₹7 Lakhs. For a modern family, ₹10 Lakh Base + ₹40 Lakh Super Top-Up is a strong inflation-proof shield.
