Insurance
For decades, the Indian insurance market has been dominated by a myth: if you don't get your money back at the end of the policy term, your premiums were wasted. This belief drives millions of families toward endowment plans, leaving them drastically underinsured. The fundamental rule to remember: never mix insurance with investment.
The appeal of an endowment plan is the maturity benefit, but it comes at the cost of inadequate life cover. For ₹50,000 a year, an endowment plan might give a 30-year-old ₹10 Lakhs of cover — not enough to replace lost income or pay off debts. A pure term plan for ₹10,000 a year can provide ₹1 Crore of cover instead.
The optimal strategy is 'Buy Term and Invest the Rest': buy the ₹1 Crore term plan for ₹10,000, and invest the remaining ₹40,000 systematically into equity mutual funds via SIP — complete protection today, and a liquid, inflation-beating corpus for tomorrow.
